Style and substance: NYC’s top fashion-related activities unveiled
Crazy for couture? Where to go and what to see beyond New York Fashion Week
With New York Fashion Week falling from February 10 to 18, we round up the city’s top fashion-related activities, all within easy reach of The Bryant and AKA Sutton Place, Oryx World Portfolio’s latest developments.
Picture perfect
Anyone with an interest in clothes’ history should visit the lobby of 1410 Broadway and see photographs of old factories in Garment District. Free, quick and informative, the experience offers a glimpse into the area’s rich textile culture. The building is also home to several fashion showrooms.
Walk the Walk
Wrap up warm and head to the Fashion Walk of Fame on 7th Avenue between 34th Street and 42nd Street. Look for gold circles in the sidewalk on the east side of 7th Avenue. Each plaque displays information and a sketch on a world-renowned international designer.
Shiny shoes
As you explore the city’s rich fashion heritage, it would be rude not to visit the corner of Sixth Avenue and 47th Street. Here you will find Don Ward, a typical New Yorker, building up his shoe-shining business on the sidewalk. Pay three dollars, jump in the chair and watch the sheen return to your best leather uppers.
Feeling FIT
On 27th Street and 7th Street is the striking Museum at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology). With free and well-curated exhibits, the museum’s permanent collection includes more than 50,000 garments and accessories from the 18th century to the present day. Look out for pieces from Balenciaga, Chanel and Dior.
Go Retro
Step back in time and visit Resurrection, a haven of luxury labels from the 1960s to 2000s. Whether you’re after Gucci or Chanel, for him or for her, this Great Jones Street boutique, one of the world’s premier vintage clothing venues, can almost certainly help.
In the mood
Located on the third floor of 225 37th Street, Mood Designer Fabrics is one of the world’s top destinations for textiles. Named one of ‘Fashion’s 50 Most Powerful’ by The New York Daily News, the NYC flagship store offers three floors of material plus a stylish home decor store on the ground floor.
